Today we went back down the Firth of Clyde to Fort Matilda to see the Parade of Sail as the Tall Ships Race left the Clyde. It was raining when we left Glasgow but against all the odds the sun came out just as the first of the ships rounded the point into the Firth. It was a flat calm day so most of the Class A ships were cruising, apart from the oldest ship Europa which came down the river under a full spread of canvas. The smaller schooners also made the best of what little wind there was.

Once again the Colombian ship Gloria completely stole the show. Gloria was the only ship that manned the yards and as if that wasn't enough the crew were wearing colour coordinated shirts to match the Colombian ensign. They also had a band playing on deck and an enormous flotilla of smaller vessels in company. Really, you've got to love these guys!

Unfortunately the ships were a bit too far out to get decent pics so you'll have to take my word that they were gorgeous :)

Looks wonderful! Reminds me of the American Cup, except with ships of old and not the racing sail ships... ^_^

It was fabulous to see them all coming down the river. Most of the big Class A ships in the race were built fairly recently but the Europa was launched in 1911.

Mmmmmmpretty! Looks like an excellent day for it and they are all so lovely.

And a very happy (belated?) birthday; I'm sure with tall ships involved it was a good one!

It was a lovely day :) The weather has been atrocious here this summer so we were very lucky to get some sun!

Sorry to crash in on your thread, but I thought I'd post a pic I took a few years ago. Shows Gloria's crew manning the yards, as you described above. I had a great view of the ship coming into the harbor from FOC. She was moored a stone's throw from us at pier 8 (we're at pier 7).

Oooh not at all! Thank you for posting this, what a gorgeous picture :) This is exactly how she looked yesterday but she was far too far out for me to take a decent pic. These Colombians certainly know how to put on a show!

You're very welcome :) I'd never been to this part of the Clyde before but it was the perfect spot to watch the ships going by and we were soooo lucky with the weather.
