Wonder if they had a sauna too?
Aug. 5th, 2011 11:50 amHey look! Who knew The Bloody Indy had a swimming pool?! Actually this contemporary illustration is of the 1864 Mercantile Marine Service Training Ship Indefatigable rather than the 1784 HMS Indefatigable. However, given his own penchant for diving off yard arms to rescue drowning shipmates, I feel certain that Sir Edward would highly approve of the boys of the Mercantile Marine being taught to swim. It also rather makes you wonder how much fun the real Indy boys would have had with an on board swimming pool ;)

Date: 2011-08-06 09:06 am (UTC)Nodbear come and see this - where does Dear Anteros find these delightful images all the time. A timely action if I may say so- more than about time that they expected them all to swim.
Nodbear: What even if that cut down the potential for heroic rescues by their noble captains?
EP: Humph - all that heroic stuff was overrated by Osler - though I don't think it looks deep enough to dive in *sigh*
Nodbear: Well not from the yardarm anyway= but by then they didn't have a yardarm of course..
great picture ! Sir Edward has pottered off for a swift half at the Blue River Cafe bar and to buy his own personal Admiral -Duck for the spare bathroom. Though the one in my icon is an Archie - duck I think..
So I can say that the thought of a swimming pool on the 1783 Indy is,shall we say,distracting..
would Horatio have to have been reminded that there was a dress code ?

Date: 2011-08-06 01:47 pm (UTC)How kind of you to grace the pages of my humble journal. I thought you might appreciate this image which I confess I came across while seeking distraction during a particularly tedious meeting.
You protest that Mr Osler overrated "all that heroic stuff" but I suspect my dear sir that you are very much inclined to underrate it!
I do hope you enjoy a pleasant constitutional by the river.
I remain as always your fondest etc, etc

Only after signing in and on board, the poor sailors realize the booze is mere watered down grog, and the pool really is huge, consisting of all the water around the ship...
