I always think it's a bit of a cheat re-posting images from tumblr as I don't actually have a tumblr account but this sailor boy is too lovely not to share :) I came across him on the ever wonderful Adventures of the Blackgang tumblr.

Boy in sailor suit and cap, reclining (1911) by F. Holland Day

According to wikipedia (so it must be true):

Fred Holland Day (Boston July 8, 1864 - November 12, 1933) was an American photographer and publisher. He was the first in the U.S.A. to advocate that photography should be considered a fine art.

Day's life and works have long been controversial, since his photographic subjects were often nude male youths. Pam Roberts, in F. Holland Day (Waanders Pub, 2001; catalog of a Day exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum) writes: "Day never married and his sexual orientation, whilst it is widely assumed that he was homosexual, because of his interests, his photographic subject matter, his general flamboyant demeanor, was, like much else about him, a very private matter."

What a sweet and wistful guy. I wonder what he is thinking about. there is something so lovely about the curve of that hand near his face. Fine art for sure, I think.

Isn't he lovely? I thought you would like him. I would certainly give more than a penny for his thoughts.

It seems that Mr Holland Day liked sailor boys:

Wonderful. Thee is that sense of pre WWl innocence here, too.

I had never heard of Day. What a long life he had. (Born in the Civil War, and lived well into the plane and car age, and radio. Eventful times.

The boy in the middle is sort of how I picture Basil Hall...

They're really captivating aren't they?

I had never heard of Day either until I came across the top image on Adventures of the Blackgang. He certainly lived through fascinating times, I wonder has anyone written a biography of him?

Gosh you're right, he does bear a passing ressemblance to Basil Hall!
