Charles Demuth
Aug. 17th, 2011 09:48 pmCame across Charles Demuth today. Demuth was an American avante garde watercolourist born in Pennsylvania in 1883. He was a close associate of Georgia O'Keeffe and when he died in 1935 he left many of his works to O'Keeffe. Many of Demuth's paintings depict the emergent gay scene at the turn of the last century and he seems to have had a bit of a thing about sailors.

Date: 2011-08-17 09:39 pm (UTC)I could not at first tell what the guy at the beach was doing to the sitting naked figure. I thought he was maybe applying sunblock. But no, didn't someone write a Horatio, Archie, Bush, beach fic like that once? I seem to remember...
Also, wiki says he trained briefly with someone who had worked with Thomas Eakins. (Eakins of the lovely light and the boys diving and swimming and boating...)

If they haven't they should!
Thomas Eakins.
I don't think I've heard of him, or did you mention him to me once before. Very, very nice indeed :)

Am now picturing Eakins, Tuke and Demuth at the beach together. What would they have in their picnic basket I wonder?

Date: 2011-08-18 10:08 pm (UTC)I always used to discuss 'friending' first, but these days I usually just friend people if I find them interesting and leave it up to them if they want to friend me back or not, no expectations or obligations. My LJ's seldom updated, I mainly have it for reading and commenting around the place. I f-lock my real-lifey posts not because I've any great sense of privacy or TMI (bwahaha, definitely not!) but just so that I'm not instantly identifiable to RL friends, family, colleagues, classmates, etc - and so I can bitch about them uninhibitedly here if the mood takes me. :-)
