Came across Charles Demuth today. Demuth was an American avante garde watercolourist born in Pennsylvania in 1883. He was a close associate of Georgia O'Keeffe and when he died in 1935 he left many of his works to O'Keeffe. Many of Demuth's paintings depict the emergent gay scene at the turn of the last century and he seems to have had a bit of a thing about sailors.

Wow... I had never heard of him. I especially like the dancing one, where the blond sailor and the dark sailor are dancing with girls but looking at each other...

I could not at first tell what the guy at the beach was doing to the sitting naked figure. I thought he was maybe applying sunblock. But no, didn't someone write a Horatio, Archie, Bush, beach fic like that once? I seem to remember...

Also, wiki says he trained briefly with someone who had worked with Thomas Eakins. (Eakins of the lovely light and the boys diving and swimming and boating...)

Isn't the blond sailor dancing with another sailor at the same time as eyeing up the dark sailor?

(Still giggling at the "sunblock"! :-D)

On second look, you may be right. Seems to be dancing with someone wearing pants, anyway.

Maybe that's the thought that's making them blush a bit? :-D

If they haven't they should!

Thomas Eakins.
I don't think I've heard of him, or did you mention him to me once before. Very, very nice indeed :)

It may have certain skin soothing properties.

I think I told you about Eakins when you told me about Tuke.

Am now picturing Eakins, Tuke and Demuth at the beach together. What would they have in their picnic basket I wonder?

That's right! I remember now :) Tuke, Eakins and Demuth certainly seem to have certain shared themes don't they?

What would they have in their picnic basket I wonder?
Sunblock obviously! XD

Interesting and lovely watercolours! I don't remember ever hearing about Demuth before. As art, I really like the "Sails" one here, I think it's beautiful, different and just really well done.

I think so too. I went and looked at his work online. Really good, all different kinds of things.

He certainly had quite a talent didn't he?

I came across Demuth purely by accident yesterday, he's not an artist I know. The Sails are gorgeous aren't they? I could definitely live with that painting!

The LJ friending thingy failed for me too the other day, then worked fine later on - I suspect they've done something to it recently to make it as glitchy as the rest of LJ! BTW I crosspost everything to Dreamwidth these days (same username over there).

I always used to discuss 'friending' first, but these days I usually just friend people if I find them interesting and leave it up to them if they want to friend me back or not, no expectations or obligations. My LJ's seldom updated, I mainly have it for reading and commenting around the place. I f-lock my real-lifey posts not because I've any great sense of privacy or TMI (bwahaha, definitely not!) but just so that I'm not instantly identifiable to RL friends, family, colleagues, classmates, etc - and so I can bitch about them uninhibitedly here if the mood takes me. :-)
