I do realise that being expected to admire the artistic endeavours of other peoples offspring can be somewhat tedious, however I couldn't resist sharing this splendid drawing that daughter presented me with the other day. It's a picture of "ships fighting and firing their cannons" and I've annotated it helpfully so you can tell what's going on.

I'm particularly fond of the sailor doing the bathroom in the heads which are equipped with toilet, toilet roll holder and wash hand basin. How civilised!

Oh how delightful!

And the hygiene of it all. I especially love the shark on the bottom right.

She really captured the feeling of the action.

I wonder if small Horatio ever drew pictures of ships? Or Archie? Parents must have saved drawings, even back then right?

I hope the sailor on the toilet will not be blamed for missing the battle! (I trust he will wash his hands too.)

Really made my day. Did she draw this at school?

Yes indeed! She had to ask her dad where sailors did the toilet, he pointed to where the heads would be and she interpreted accordingly XD

I especially love the shark on the bottom right.
I should also have added that the shark is about the eat the unfortunate sailor that has fallen in the water beside him!

I wonder if small Horatio ever drew pictures of ships? Or Archie?
I could imagine Horatio drawing very precise little ship diagrams, whereas Archie's artistic endeavours would be more "impressionistic"

Did she draw this at school?
No, she drew this as a special present for me on Saturday morning because "mummy likes sailors" :)

Has anyone caught the brief scene (so brief you'll miss it if you blink) in Master and Commander of the sailor presumably sitting on one of the seats of ease? It's after Jack has decided to pursue the Frenchman around Cape Horn. If you catch it, it's just a pair of legs with trouser bunched at the feet.

Lol! Funny you should mention that! I noticed that for the first time when we watched the film (for the millionth time) just a couple of weeks ago :)

Who needs sails when you have that many flags?!

Reassuring to know that the wee one doesn´t seem to be in the "heaving bosoms and romantic sunsets" department!
She's only five and a half so if she was I'd be a bit worried! XD

I'd say the shark happened to have bitten down on a chunk of ship's biscuit that hadn't been in the sea long enough to soften up.

It's a well known fact ships had toilet roll holders.

Ships may have had toilet toll holders but our bathroom doesn't so I haven't a clue where she got the idea from!

Bartholomew and I are appalled!

Clearly the poor child is crying out for the civilizing influence of somewhere to hang the loo paper.

Thought you might be ;)

If we did have a toilet roll holder I suspect she would use it hang her sword on!

Well then it will be a multi purpose holder!

Hey stranger! Lovely to see you round these parts :D How's life treating you? What stage are you at with your studies now?

I pull your tumblr feed into my flist and it never fails to make me smile :) I particularly liked the mermaid looking up the skaters skirts and "it would be such an honour to go down on you" XD

Hullo! So sorry to have been a stranger, I miss being around these parts! Life has been keeping me busy, but I've just written a blog update so LJ is now more or less up to date :P I've actually graduated but I'm starting a Master's in a couple of weeks so getting right back into the thick of academia (and wondering if I'm not perhaps crazy for doing so)

I'm glad you like my Tumblr! :D Tumblr is pretty brilliant. You do just find those most brilliant stuff ^^ Have you ever considered jumping on board the HMSTumblr?

My dear Madam Anteros

She has all the hallmarks of one of our finest I must say -though her soundness on the subject of piracy might be a trifle in doubt perhaps

ah - your picture - the western squadron: a Spring morning and Amazon, Concorde and the Revolutionnaire in company - * large heartfelt sigh*

yours as ever fondly

It was very thoughtful of her. She shut herself in the dining room while she was drawing and I wasn't allowed to come in till she was finished :) Of course I have no idea how I'm going to explain it when she starts drawing stuff like this at school!

First of all, what a lovely thought of her to make the drawing for you because you like sailors. :D

I have to admire the treasure chest, the ensign, and all those masts and flags. Surely those are multi purpose flags which double as sails? The gunports are all kinds of awesome and as an enemy I would tremble at the sight of them.

Really, I could pour over the drawing and your daughter's eye for details for some time. The sailors would be mighty pleased about their bog with toilet roll holder and sink. Stephen Maturin would very much approve of the hygiene.

From: [identity profile] anteros-lmc.livejournal.com
The gun ports are indeed awesome. And if you'll note the red lines coming from the cannons on the line of battle ships at the bottom - that means they're firing! Oh and the little yellow thing hanging half way up the central mast is a lantern.

I will tell daughter that Stephen would approve of the hygienic facilities. She knows who Stephen is of course, he's the little man who sits beside Jack on the mantelpiece!

As I said: such detail! To even think of a lantern! Your daughter has the right ideas for a future AoS fan.

Please do! :DDDDDDDDDD

I'm guessing the lantern came from her playmobil pirate ship which has one in exactly that position :)

What a brilliant picture! I'm blown away by all the details. I like the sharks best, though, especially the one that looks as if it's just eaten a sailor who didn't</> wash his hands properly.

I love the sharks' zig zagggy teeth but I feel a bit sorry for the poor floundering sailors, even if they didn't wash their hands properly XD

Not tedious at all. This is magnificent. Much better than some of the megabuck stuff that passes for modern art.

Tell her she's a star. I have some little stickers of buoys and shipwrecks for her (long story) which will get into the post as soon as I have a mo.

Gosh you're right! I hadn't noticed that :) I should also add that the sailors in the crows nests aren't just hanging around up there. They're looking for islands don't you know!
