A lovely wee story from the memoirs of Captain Jahleel Brenton. Brenton is describing the fond farewell he received from the General of the town of St Lo, when he and his men passed through the town as prisoners of war en route to Verdun.

"General Dellegorgue was present on this occasion, and when the prisoners were ready to march, he came up to me, and embraced me in the warmest manner; wishing me a speedy release from this captivity, and health, and happiness. This interview was highly amusing to the young midshipmen, who had never before witnessed such a demonstration of cordiality. One of them was heard to exclaim, 'See, the French General kissing our skipper;'"

Awwww bless!

Raikes, H., (1846), Memoir of the life and services of Vice-admiral Sir Jahleel Brenton, baronet, K.C.B., Hatchard and Son.

PS Apologies for the rather sporadic responses recently, been a bit busy here this week :/

thought there should be a matching one of the white hair, ribboned orders, showy epaulettes and the fetching silk sashes

the uniform and the distinction are very alike

but Ned would have given a lot to be painted as Jacques was on the deck of his frigate and therefore at home

thank you for admiral JB - you may appropriate the matching one of course:)

Bless! Look at the pait of them, done up in tinsel like a pair of matching Christmas trees! These are both lovely portraits and it's wonderful to see them both together like this :)

And here is Ned's very own frigate, the dear old girl.

oh, how charming! I approve muchly.

Jahleel Brenton had Cochrane's Speedy before TC received the command of her...and he sat at the court martial for the loss of said sloop. :D

Isn't it a lovely story? I must read the whole of Brenton's memoir, I've only read snippets of it quoted in other books. I always think of Brenton as captain of the Speedy :)
