This season I shall mostly be wearing....

This rather gorgeous dress from the V&A dates from 1872 and is inspired by sailors uniforms. Personally speaking I'm frequently inspired by sailors uniforms but my inspiration tends to lead in other directions ;)

The catalogue entry reads as follows:

This is a jaunty, sensible woman’s outfit of the early 1870s designed for boating or seaside walking. A hemline just at the ankle indicates a garment intended for walking outdoors. The style of the dress has been inspired by the colours and stripes of sailors' uniforms. It is made of cotton, so it is easily washed and dried. Despite its practical use, the ensemble still incorporates the details of fashionable dress, with an overskirt in front and a bustle worn underneath at the back.

Perfect for the Age of Sail fangirl!

Very flattering indeed. Could be worn with the cactus underpants as well!

Oh yes! This would be perfect with the cactus knickers!

It's very dapper isn't it? I love the detail on the cuffs :)

Yes-- I was just thinking that. My daughter had a series of little sailor dresses when she was small. She used to wear them when we met the ship. (After six month deployments usually, any shorter than that and he just came home with no fuss.) Daughter was awfully cute I thought.

I bet your daughter looked adorable meeting the ship in a cute little sailor dress :) I have never attempted to get my daughter into a sailor dress, don't think I'd have much luck there. She has no problem with pirate outfits though! XD

This is an awfully pretty dress. Such lovely sleeves, and I love the colours, they're very me. The skirt looks very starched, though.

Yes the colours are gorgeous aren't they? The skirt is rather voluminous but I bet you could hide a couple of mids under there! ;)

but I bet you could hide a couple of mids under there

Which of course is the best use for a crinoline ever. The mids would have to be really slim and limber, too, which is a bonus.

ROFL! You might even manage to fit a brace of powder monkeys under there if you were lucky!

The powder monkey might be a tad bit young, though. Despite what you might have heard, I do draw a line at prepubescent!

Fair enough. More space of the slim and limber mids to cavort!

It has started out innocently enough, with a civilised chat about fashion. And all of a sudden there's limber mids cavorting.

Dont worry, I'm sure there must be some kind of fortifying Victorian concoction to banish cavorting mids from one's nether regions.

That is a relief. I was getting worried about the state of my petticoats after the mids had cavorted in them, as it were.

*Tries hard not to imagine mids cavorting in petticoats*

*Fails*

Miss Kitty would be delighted to lend her petticoats for cavorting purposes, I am sure.

Now I am picturing the moment when the children come out of the dress of the Sugar Plum Fairy.(In the Nutcracker,)But I am seeing them as mids of course.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Without the bustle and maybe not quite so starched, I'd be more than willing to wear this dress. The cuffs are wonderful and the stripes are vertical. How I wish I were a talented seamstress. :D

I love the detailing on the back of the bodice too :)

Me too! I bet the awfully talented [livejournal.com profile] rum_inspector could reproduce this beautifully!

Oh, indeed the details are splendid, but I feel my natural bustle *g* will be enough to support the folds ;D

I'm quite glad with my simple navy blue dress Regency style. :D (No, I have not made it myself)

Calm yourself my dear!! The buttons are actually bone, which I guess was cheaper.

WANT! *cough* Pardon me.
Well, maybe without stripes.

Now women lack nothing to work in the Admiralty. With pretty lieutenants for assistants. :) Stop and go back, the history, you need to be remade!

Aww but it's the stripes that make it!

Stop and go back, the history, you need to be remade!
We need to arrange some kind of AoS / Dr Who cross over so we can hijack the tardis and travel back in time. I'm sure our Mr Bush would be happy to oblige ;)

isn't it? Do you think this would be "sensible" enough for your new job?!

From: [identity profile] rum-inspector.livejournal.com
:D I usually change to uniform after we leave home port (so I've cast off the ropes wearing miniskirts etc.) so I'd love to see the faces of other crew if I'd happen to come to work wearing something as "sensible" as that...
