Since posting that splendid picture the other day of Eliza Carthy with the ship on her head I've been looking for the original French wig that surely inspired the photoshoot and I've finally found it. Allow me to present the height of fashion in naval head gear....

The extravagant "À la Belle Poule" hairdo was created in Paris in 1778 to commemorate the engagement between the Belle Poule and the Arethusa which heralded the beginning of French intervention in the American War of Independence.

So what d'you think, should I get a Bloody Indy hairdo?

"I despair I really do..." to quote a certain Admiral Lord Exmouth who must be spinning in his grave right now!

I recently bought a kindle for reading historic books and documents from google books and archive.org. It's not an ideal solution as the digitisation process really struggles to cope with the formatting, fonts and typesetting of historic documents and older books, so you tend to end up with garbage in amongst the text. However it does mean I can read the Gentleman's Magazine and the Naval Chronicle on the bus! Occasionally though the kindle throws up an error that makes you go WTF?!

This morning I was reading Edward Osler's The Life Of Admiral Viscount Exmouth downloaded in kindle format from archive.org, when I came across the following....

The young officer , who, like him, has devoted himself to an arduous LIFE OF vice, with nothing to rely on but his character and his sword, may derive instruction from his example and encouragement from his success.

I beg your pardon? A WHAT? An arduous life of vice?!

Referring back to the google books pdf reveals it should actually read "has devoted himself to an arduous service" but "service" is split over two pages and kindle has lost the "ser" and inserted the page heading "LIFE OF" instead.

There you have it, 250 years of untarnished reputation trashed by technology! Just as well[livejournal.com profile] nodbear is off gallivanting with [livejournal.com profile] mylodon otherwise I suspect there would be trouble!

Well that's helpful... As well as abolishing the UK Museums Libraries and Archives Council (wtf?!) and the UK Film Council the Tory bastards Coalition Government have also just announced that they are going to abolish the Advisory Committee on Historic Wreck Sites and Advisory Committee on National Historic Ships. I have to confess that I haven't previously heard of the former but the loss of the latter is a tragedy. For those who haven't come across them before the Advisory Committee on National Historic Ships are:

..the successor to the National Historic Ships Committee, which emerged from a seminar held in 1991 to discuss the problems facing the preservation of historic ships and vessels in the UK and the evident neglect of this important part of our heritage.

National Historic Ships carries a wider remit than its predecessor body, looking not only at the immediate issues concerning historic vessels in the UK, but also addressing questions relating to the support infrastructure for historic ships, their potential for contributing in the wider economic, social and community context, and by maintaining a watch list of vessels abroad with potential UK significance.

How far sighted of our overlords. At this stage I am unclear if it's just the Advisory Committee that is being abolished or the entire organisation, but it's a sad day regardless.

Oh my fucking god. I knew fandom could be, shall we say, a little strange but I had no idea just how strange until I stumbled across this. This is just beyond weird, and wrong on so many levels that I don't even know where to start.

EDIT: Sadly this video has been locked :( I did wonder if it was prime material for a cease and desist request. Shame. It really was an extraordinary piece of work. I have no doubt that kleghacat will go far.

Crazy weirdness under the cut )
